UNHCR(The UN Refugee Agency), Global Trends: Forced Displacement in 2018. https://www.unhcr.org/statistics/unhcrstats/5d08d7ee7/unhcr-global-trends-2018.html?query=Global%20trends(2019.07.22)
Abstract
According to The UN refugee agency’s report, Global trends: Forced displacement in 2018, about a half of 70.8 million refugees are children below 18 years of age. Many children are suffering due to war or war related violence all over the world. War is not a topic that is far from children’s daily lives. The purpose of this study is to examine common children’s war experiences and to analyze the war portrayed in the picture books that readers would vicariously experience. A total of four picture books about children’s war experiences in different countries were selected and analyzed for this study. As a result, it was found that all the children experienced the destruction of their peaceful daily lives and the separation from their families. When looking at the reason of war, war scenes, and how the war ended, it was found that the reason of war was not explained but the group of people who started the war were clearly pointed out. The war scenes were also described realistically. In all four picture books, the stories did not end with the end of the war because the war was still going on. The picture books about war used the elements of pictures to show readers about war situations and the relations of power between characters. From the educational standpoint, the picture books about war exhibit the sufferings that every human experiences regardless of the nationality. The suffering helps children think about war more realistically through characters’ experiences. Reading picture books about war may help readers feel empathy with children who have experienced or are experiencing war. It also may create a chance for children to ponder their positions regarding war and hope for a peaceful life.
