초록

This study, taking a discursive perspective, theorizes the endogenous process of de-institutionalization of stigma, defined as the process by which social actors accept stigmatized practices as right and proper by changing their belief system. Positing that structural barriers (social stratification, structural inertia, and stigmatization) are strongly involved in the process of de-institutionalization of stigma, we argue that discursive processes are differentiated throughout the process of de-institutionalization of stigma. In the process of de-institutionalization of stigma identified into the origin phase and the mobilization phase, we proposed different discursive strategies: in the origin phase, emotional responses from quotidian disruption prevail over strategic articulations, whereas in the mobilization phase, strategic articulations are dominant over emotional responses. From this study, we can expand our knowledge on the role of discourse in institutional change, especially in contentious contexts.
