이 연구는 코로나19 팬데믹 상황에서 낙인찍힌 사회집단 구성원, 그 중에서도 신천지 교인의 행동양식을 설명하려는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해, 신천지를 떠난 사람(탈퇴자 6명)과 남은 사람(교인 5명)을 포함한 11명을 대상으로 심층면접을 진행하였다. 우리는 신천지의 교회 시스템과 한국사회의 낙인 현상이 신천지 교인의 행동양식, 즉 탈퇴(exit)·항의(voice)·충성(loyalty)을 선택하는 데 미친 영향을 분석하였다. 아울러, 우리는 신천지에 남은 교인들이 사회적 낙인에 대응하여 일상에서는 수행하는 행동 전략을 ‘자발적 고립’(voluntary isolation), ‘모범 시민’(good citizenship), ‘남 탓하기’(transfer of responsibility)의 세 유형으로 구분하여 분석하였다. 이 연구는 다양한 속성을 지닌 사람들이 함께 어울려 생활하는 상황에서 ‘파편회된 사회’를 극복할 수 있는 실마리를 ‘모범 시민 전략’에서 발견한다. 즉, 한국에서 사회통합을 달성하기 위해서는 ‘차이의 정치’(politics of difference)가 필수다.
Abstract
This paper aims to examine the behavioral patterns of a socially stigmatized group, the members of Shincheonji church in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted in-depth interviews of five current and six former members of the church. We analyzed effects of the church system and the social stigmatization on the strategic behaviors Shincheonji members and identified three strategies: exit, voice, and loyalty. We also analyzed the behavioral strategies that current Shincheonji believers perform in everyday life in response to social stigma and identified three strategies: ‘voluntary isolation’, ‘good citizenship’, and ‘the transfer of responsibility’. Finally, we argue that ‘politics of difference’ is essential to overcome the ‘fragmented society’ and achieve social integration in the situations where people of various attributes and backgrounds live together.
