Abstract
This paper analyzes three works from 1930s Taiwanese proletarian literature—Lai He's Mr. Snake (in Mandarin Chinese), Cai Chutong's Collective Punishment (in Taiwanese Han writing), and Yang Kui's The Newspaper Delivery Boy (in Japanese)—to explore how narrative strategies and perceptions of reality are shaped by the choice of writing language. Each work reflects colonial reality differently: Mandarin allows for critical distance, Taiwanese Han writing fosters intimate realism, and Japanese supports class solidarity. The study reveals that language choice is not merely stylistic but closely tied to the author's worldview and narrative logic, offering a renewed perspective on colonial leftist literature.
