Abstract
This article examines the questions posed by the technological society depicted in Hao Jingfang's “Hospital for Eternal Life” regarding our imagination of the body, memory, death, and eternal life. The ‘New human’ (Xinren) in this short story is a clone that came into being through mind-uploading and body-transfer technologies. This story is concerned with the question of whether a cloned body can be regarded as the same being as the original, a question deeply intertwined with the quest for truth and various ethical dilemmas. This story takes us further to even question the very validity of this inquiry itself. On the question of whether the uploaded memory is identical to the original memory, the story, through the protagonist Chen Rui's flashbacks, reveals the perceptual experiences of what Maurice Merleau-Ponty calls ‘one’s own body’ and the characteristics of memory imprinted on it, prompting reflection on what the act of remembering means to humans. It also explores how our notions of death, eternal life, and the relationship between life and death might be transformed in a society in which overcoming death through advanced technology has become a universal desire.
