Abstract

This paper explores the technological and philosophical implications of mind uploading as its central theme in relation to posthuman evolution. Mind uploading refers to the process of transferring the total mental pattern of human beings from the biological brain to an artificial computational medium, and it raises fundamental questions about the nature of human existence beyond the expansion of science and technology. It evokes the vision that humans, by merging with technology, will become de-humanized and evolve into higher-order posthuman beings. Accordingly, this paper first outlines the principles of Whole Brain Emulation(WBE) and Brain-Computer Interfaces(BCI), which constitute the technological foundation of mind uploading, and examines the related philosophical issues. It critically investigates whether the uploaded version of oneself would possess consciousness, whether it can indeed be considered the original self, and raises questions of personal identity, psychological continuity, the importance of the body, and the problem of embodied cognition. Based on academic discussions, this study examines various possibilities and produces socio-cultural discourses through the futuristic imagination of contemporary sci-fi films and dramas. It reflects on the possibility that the uploaded human mind may exist as information within a simulated virtual world, the possibility that the boundary between the uploaded mind and AI may be dissolved to generate a hybrid posthuman entity, and explores the problems of identity and psychological continuity through the relationship between mind and body. In various sci-fi narratives, the relationship among the digital mind, artificial intelligence, and the body appears not as a mere technological imitation, but as a hybrid posthuman ontology that dismantles the boundaries between humanity and non-humanity, life and non-life. Such imagination simultaneously contains both the technological optimism directed toward the future of human evolution and the ethical anxiety concerning the extinction of human essence.
