Abstract

This study constructs a large-scale big data corpus based on ZengdingZhushi Quantangshi(增訂注釋全唐詩) in order to analyze the use of historical figures in Tang poetry and to reveal the poets’ aesthetic orientation in a systematic manner. Previous research has focused primarily on individual poets or thematic analyses of particular figures, illuminating only fragments of the complex poetic context. In contrast, this study combines comprehensive data construction with statistical and network analysis to visualize the underlying image systems and semantic networks that shape Tang poetic discourse. The corpus includes 761 poets and 2,174 historical figures, totaling more than 20,000 references. The results demonstrate that historical figures in Tang poetry function not merely as rhetorical allusions or ornamental references but as symbolic mediators through which poets project their personal identities and moral ideals. Poets such as Li Bai, Du Fu, Bai Juyi, and Li Shangyin actively employed historical figures to convey diverse poetic intentions—heroic transcendence, political frustration, philosophical reflection, or tragic lyricism. The most frequently invoked figures include Tao Qian, Sima Xiangru, Xie An, Jia Yi, Xie Lingyun, the Goddess of Wu Mountain, and Qu Yuan, revealing a tendency among Tang literati to integrate the cultural orthodoxy of the Han dynasty with the reclusive ethos of the Eastern Jin. The study also identifies notable diachronic changes: Early Tang poets favored imperial or founding figures reflecting the consciousness of dynastic legitimacy; High Tang poets admired reclusive sages symbolizing moral integrity; Mid Tang poets emphasized loyalty and virtue in times of turmoil; and Late Tang poets increasingly turned to mythological female figures embodying emotional intensity and tragic self-awareness. These patterns suggest that the representation of historical figures evolved in close response to political and social transformations. Ultimately, this research demonstrates that big data and digital humanities methods can substantially enrich traditional literary interpretation by uncovering the structural dynamics and symbolic logic of historical imagery in Tang poetry.
