초록

The primary aim of this paper is to analyse the recent developments in Minimalism on the Focus. In this paper, a syntax-based approach is presented. After pointing out the structural differences between English and Italian, it is observed that feature-checking for Focus, unlike checking of phi-features, has a theory-internal motivation only. Focus is a property encoded in the syntax by means of the designated syntactic position. For that Rizzi's(1997) parallel work on English and Italian are presented. A syntax-based approach for Focus easily explains why a focused constituent in certain languages moves to the left periphery. Movement is triggered by the purely syntactic requirement that the focused phrase be in a spec-head relation with the Foc head, in order to satisfy a 'Focus Criterion', or in order to enter a feature-checking relation with the head. But recently, according to Chomsky, all kinds of focus effects are obtained by focus movement to the edge of the strong phase.
