Abstract

In Pre-Qin literature, the concept of ‘shadow’ symbolized the formlessness of the Dao (道) and the transience of the phenomenal world, offering insight into the nature of perception by representing an illusion rather than a substance. At this stage, the shadow served as a cosmological and ontological metaphor, illuminating the relationship between the material and immaterial realms. However, as Han dynasty society became increasingly focused on the maintenance of political power and the development of material civilization, the concept of ‘shadow’ was expanded and applied in more concrete and practical contexts. In works such as Han Feizi and Shiji, the shadow was used to illustrate the relationship between ruler and subject and the influence of the sovereign; in Annals of Master Yan, it developed into a metaphor for personal morality and inner reflection; and in Discourses on Salt and Iron and Han Shi Wai Zhuan, it became a device for explaining the maintenance of social order and the relationship between ruler and people. This transformation reflects the process by which ancient Chinese society constructed more pragmatic and concrete frameworks for human relationships and social order, demonstrating a significant shift of the ‘shadow’ concept from philosophical speculation to practical metaphors for governance, self-cultivation, and communal order. Thus, the evolution of this concept is not merely a semantic change, but a meaningful indicator of broader shifts in social structure and values.
