Abstract
During the Republican period, the intellectuals Qi Rushan and Xu Lingxiao were actively engaged in discovering the value of Chinese drama and sought to elevate Peking opera to the status of the quintessence of Chinese traditional culture. They held cultural power within the spheres of theatrical performance and criticism, and the discourses they generated around traditional drama were imbued with an elitist perspective. In their discourses, they drew a clear boundary between intellectuals and the masses. They wrote with intellectuals as their presumed readers, emphasized the responsibilities intellectuals bore in the theatrical world, and excluded the masses by dismissing popular taste as misguided and in need of correction. Furthermore, they underscored the social and didactic functions of drama, while setting forth norms for its appreciation and criticism. These can be seen as the ways in which they asserted their superiority within the cultural hierarchy surrounding traditional drama by granting to themselves, as members of the intellectual class, the authority to determine what kinds of dramatic content were desirable, and how drama ought properly to be appreciated and critiqued.
