Abstract
Philosophy is the study that loves wisdom and can be said to be the establishment of a thinking system and practice activity to solve the problems of the times. This means that philosophy is an area of study that studies theories dealing with wisdom, while being an area of practice to essentially solve all kinds of problems arising in concrete scenes of life that are changing dynamically. In the 20th century, in the Korean philosophical world, studies of Western philosophy were conducted extensively rather than those of traditional Eastern philosophy centered on Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. This means that the colonial policy of Japanese imperialism in the first half of the 20th century, which longed for Western modern civilization, and the modernization policy of the South Korean government in the second half of the 20th century, which actively pursued industrialization, affected the Korean philosophical world. Around that time, some Eastern philosophy researchers blindly revered traditional philosophy from an archaeological perspective, and some Western philosophy researchers uncritically imported and introduced Western theories. Their attitudes as such are regarding theories formed in the East in ancient times or thinking systems formed in the West as universal truths, and regarding the thinking systems presented to solve problems occurring in Korea in the 20th century as the particular. They think that the unchanging, a priori universal ideology can solve all problems that arise ‘now’ and ‘here’, transcending time and space. The attitude as such is different from the independent study attitude seeking to find productive solutions by intensively studying problems occurring in concrete scenes of history. However, in the Korean philosophical world in the 21st century, studies Woori Philosophy are conducted actively. Quite a few of the philosophers who participate in the studies criticize metaphysical theories that pursue the universal given a priori, and pursue the universal that is made derived from the particular restricted in terms of time and space. This means that they attach importance to the proposition of the universal from the particular, rather than the particular from the universal, under the perspective of the dialectical development of the particular and the universal. The universal as such is affected by time and space and is the limited universal or the time-limited universal. This means that Woori Philosophy researchers critically reflect on attitudes such as the attitude to blind trust in traditional philosophy formed in East Asia in ancient times and the attitude to uncritically introduce and disseminate Western philosophy, and think solving problems occurring in Korea today which correspond to now and here as a major role of philosophy. Thus far, Woori Philosophy researchers have thought constructing a theoretical system regarding seeking for an autogenous philosophy reflecting the inherent senses of the people, actualizing traditional philosophy formed in the long course of history, Koreanization of foreign philosophy formed in foreign countries and disseminated, and reflecting the reality of Korea, where various problems of modern society are mixed as a major role of Woori Philosophy. They conducted various studies on the theoretical foundations, methods, and directions needed to establish the 21st century type Woori Philosophy. As a result, not a few study results were derived in such areas. However, specialized study results regarding the establishment of autogenous philosophy, the actualization of traditional philosophy, the Koreanization of foreign philosophy, and the organic combination of the particular and the universal have not been sufficiently derived. This means that hereafter, studies of Woori Philosophy should ceaselessly produce meaningful theories through in-depth and systematic studies in terms of various areas presented here or convergence.
