Abstract

This study explores the Neo-Confucianist Wang Yang-Ming’s(1472–1528) concept of ren as ‘seeing Heaven, Earth, and the myriad things as one body’ (萬物一體之仁) in relation to the theme of symbiosis. In doing so, it brings Wang’s thought into dialogue with Stephen W. Porges’s Polyvagal Theory, a contemporary neurophysiological framework, in order to explore the healing potentials grounded in the notion ‘symbiosis’ that are shared by these two bodies of thought. The methodological decision to engage Polyvagal Theory is driven by the aim of presenting Wang’s philosophy of symbiosis, articulated through the notion of wanwu yiti zhi ren(萬物一體之仁), not as a vague form of mysticism, but as a universal and practically effective mode of philosophical healing that remains viable today. Through its encounter with the Polyvagal concept of co-regulation, the symbiotic value inherent in Confucian Ren becomes more clearly articulated on a neurophysiological level. Furthermore, Ren is shown to function, within the Confucian cultural sphere, as a highly effective strategy not merely for survival, but for sustaining a qualitatively rich and flourishing life over the long term. In this light, ren emerges not only as an ideal normative principle, but as a value with significant practical implications. In particular, Wang Yang-Ming understands the core principle of life to be Ren, a relational mode of connection and coherence, and thus argues that the patterns of relationship in the civilized human ethical world ought to embody and realize the symbiotic principle of life expressed in Ren.
