Abstract
This study reconstructs the period of ‘Meeting and Commitment’(1505-1510) in the relationship between Wang Yangming and Zhan Ganquan, thereby revealing another dimension of the formation of Ming Dynasty Mind-Heart Learning(心學). Previous studies have primarily focused on analyzing the philosophical confrontations between the two thinkers, while systematic examination of the period preceding such confrontations emerged has been relatively limited. In 1505, Wang transitioned from the “study of rhetoric and rote memorization”(詞章記誦之學) to the “study of the self and mind”(身心之學) after encountering the Collected Works of Teacher Baisha(陳白沙). Concurrently, Zhan also adopted the core principle of “sitting silently to compose the mind and intuitively realizing Heavenly Principle”(默坐澄心, 體認天理), which he learned from his teacher, Chen Baisha. In 1506, the two men formed the ‘Friendship of the Dao and Righteousness’(道義之交) based on Cheng Hao(程顥)’s maxim: “The benevolent person is fused and one with the ten thousand things of Heaven and Earth”(仁者渾然與天地萬物同體). Despite a physical separation in 1507 due to Wang’s exile to Longchang, Zhan’s Nine Odes(九章) and Wang ’s responding Eight Verses(八詠) deepened their spiritual bond. A famous anecdote from the 1508 Enlightenment at Longchang(龍場悟道), where Zhanintuitively perceived his friend’s awakening through a dream, demonstrates their ‘communion beyond the physical form’(形骸之外). The period concluded in 1510 at the Daxinglong Temple(大興隆寺) when they, along with Huang Guan, made the ‘Pledge of Lifelong Learning’(終身共學之盟). The period holds significance in two key respects. First, the friendship between the two thinkers was a joint response to the historical task of reconstructing the Learning of Sagehood(聖學), grounded in the shared foundation of Baisha Learning(白沙學). Second, philosophical confrontation between them had not yet clearly emerged, suggesting that the divergence of Ming Dynasty Mind-Heart Learning was a dynamic process that gradually branched out from this common foundation, rather than being predetermined from the beginning.
