Abstract

This study aims to reveal the healing properties of the Ming Dynasty Chinese Confucian scholar Wang Yang-Ming's (1472 - 1528) Theory of Self-cultivation, which is based on the compassion of seeing all things as one body. In order to do so, I will examine 'The Polyvagal Theory' proposed by Stephan W. Porges, which has recently provided a neurophysiological basis for the field of trauma therapy, centering on the concept of 'regulation', and explore the philosophy of healing based on 'symbiosis' shared by the Polyvagal Theory and Wang Yang-Ming's self-cultivation. The reason why I would like to examine the relationship between Polyvagal Theory and Wang Yang-Ming's Self-cultivation Theory of healing is that I would like to attempt a more practical approach to the somewhat vague concept of healing. “The One with All Things” is a reinterpretation of Wang Yang-Ming's lived experience and realization of the essence of the compassion that is at the heart of Confucianism. In our atomistic modern world, everyone as a separate entity seems to be an undeniable reality, causing us insurmountable discomfort and suffering. Wang Yang-Ming's healing insights remind us that this is only one way of seeing and that we have other options, other ways of seeing and being. This study attempts to approach and understand the healing directions and methods implied by Yang Ming Wang's Theory of Self-cultivation in a contemporary context through anchoring in the dorsal vagus nerve of Polyvagal theory and Les Femi's wide attention approach. In this study, Stephan W. Porges and Deb Dana's theory of Polyvagal theory and Les Femi's Open Focus, which are based on extensive research in the fields of neurophysiology, are used as predicates to understand Wang Yang-Ming's philosophy of healing based on symbiosis.
