왕양명의 ‘만물일체’의 관점에서 ‘가족’ 돌아보기

왕양명은 ‘만물과 한 몸이 되는 인[萬物一體之仁]’이라는 말로 천지만물로 표현되는 자연전체가 하나의 유기체로서 생명을 창출하고 양육하며 쉼 없는 생명활동을 전개하는 생명의 의지[生意]를 가진 생명체라는 것을 강조한다. 그는 천지간에 존재하는 만물사이에 자연의 생명력이 막히지 않고 소통되는 자연의 덕성을 ‘仁’이라고 하는데, 仁은 천지자연의 쉼 없고 역동적인 생명창출의 근거인 생의로 자연과 인간에 다 함께 충만한 생명의 힘이자 생명의 원리이다. 왕양명은 자연의 일부로서 존재하는 인간에게 천지자연을 낳고 살리는 생명의 이치인 仁이 본성[性]으로 갖추어져 있다고 한다. 관념적이고 추상적인 원리가 아닌 천지자연의 생명의 힘이자 원리인 仁은 가족 관계에서 孝悌의 방식으로 작동하여 인륜 속에서 그 구체적인 실질성을 담보한다. 왕양명의 철학에서 孝悌는 만물을 하나로 여기는 인함[萬物一體之仁]의 첫 싹으로 임금과 신하, 남편과 아내, 친구 사이의 관계로 발전하고 산천․귀신․조수․초목과의 친함으로 확장되어 천지만물을 일체로 삼는 실질적인 기초가 된다. 본 연구는 가족은 하나의 유기체로 기능하고 개인은 그 유기체의 일부라는 기본적인 입각점에서 왕양명의 만물일체론 속에서 가족 관계의 자연적인 차원을 드러내고자 한다. 이를 위해 버트 헬링거가 만든 심리치료 기법인 가족 세우기의 ‘가족체’, ‘얽힘’, ‘질서’라는 핵심어를 중심으로 비교의 방식으로 연구를 진행한다.
Abstract
Wang Yang-Ming emphasizes ‘Virtue of the Unity of All Things’, which the whole nature as an organism is a living body having the will to create and nurture life, and unfold the relentless activities of life. ‘Virtue(仁)’ is the will of life as the basis of the endless and dynamic creation of life, the power of life and the principle of life filled in both the nature and the human beings. ‘Virtue(仁)’, as not an abstract and ideological principle but the life force of all things of nature, works for ‘filial piety and brotherly love(孝悌)’ in family relationships and secures the concrete substance in human relationships. In Wang Yang-Ming’s philosophy, ‘filial piety and brotherly love(孝悌)’ as the first bud of ‘Virtue of the Unity of All Things’ develops to the relationship between king and subject, between husband and wife, between friends, and then expands to the closeness with mountains, rivers, demons, birds, beasts, and vegetation, which leads to the substantial foundation for the Unity of All Things. On the basis stance that a family functions as a single organism and an individual is a part of the organism, I try to reveal the natural dimension in family relationship by Wang Yang-Ming’s ideas of the Unity of All Things. I attempt to highlight the natural dimension of Confucian philosophy through relating with the keyword of ‘the body of the family’, ‘entalglement’, ‘the law of the order’ in family relationship.
