Abstract
This study aims to reinterpret the philosophy of Wang Yang-Ming, a Neo-Confucian of the Ming Dynasty, in a contemporary context by engaging it with the Internal Family Systems model. Wang emphasized ti-ren(體認), or embodied knowing, valuing knowledge gained through lived experience over intellectual understanding. He considered only the knowledge realized through practice and action as true knowledge. His life story—marked by numerous hardships—demonstrates the consistency between his philosophy and way of living, embodying this experiential truth. The IFS model resonates with Wang’s thought in that it highlights the presence of the “Self” and the restoration of one’s true nature(benxing, 本性) through recognizing and harmonizing inner parts. In the Internal Family Systems sessions, the abstract notion of “true nature,” often elusive in Eastern philosophy, can be vividly experienced. The process brings clarity and calm to the mind, showing that this core self is not just a distant ideal but a living reality. Thus, Wang’s statement “We are all sages” gains tangible meaning, affirming that such inner transformation is possible for everyone.
