Abstract
Metamorphosis is the theme with which many writers since Ovid have dealt with great interest. When we say that metamorphosis consists in the process of generation in the biological dimension, we can realize that it is also the process or result of the exchange of the identities of plural entities. We can observe that there stem one single entity or several variations in the end of metamorphosis; what drwas our attention here is the fact that there remain some traces of mutual exchange of identities in them. In the Divine Comedy, many cases of metamorphosis appear; in other words, the pilgrim Dante undergoes them by which he continues his journey. It is possible to say that they play the rold of guides for Dante insofar as he finds himself transformed in the process of experiencing many cases of metamorphosis; this transformation itself is none other than a metamorphosis of Dante. If we think that the ultimate of Dante in the Comedy, as he clarifies in the letter to Cangrande, was to pursue the unification of God and man, Dante’s metamorphosis can be defined as transformation from man to a transcendental being. The metamorphosis of the pilgrim Dante into the light of God in the paradise is the ultimate point of salvation, but the writer Dante postulates the pilgrim Dante who returns to this world and strats again the pilgrimage at the dark wood in the way of internalizing his own memories. Here the pilgrim undergoes another metamorphosis. This kind of ongoing metamorphosis is totally different from that which the sinners in the hell undergo merely centering around their own isolated place and repeating the same dimension without moving toward a qualitative change.
