이 논문은 2015년에 국립국악원 무대에 올랐던 고종황제 등극의례 복원과 재현의 과정을 연구한 것이다. 당시의 공연은 『고종대례의궤』에 기록된 23개 의례 중에서 핵심적인 의례 몇 개를 선택하여 무대화한 것이다. 이를 위해 1897년 10월에 있었던 고종의 황제등극 기록인 고종대례의궤의 내용을 분석하였다. 그리고 그 중에서 실제 무대에 올랐던 주요 의례의 내용과 복원의 과정, 복원의 결과를 아울러 살펴보았다. 1897년 10월에 고종황제 등극의례를 했을 때는 명성황후의 국상기간이라서 여러 의례에서 음악연주를 할 수 없었다. 그러나 국립국악원에서 재현하는 무대에서는 황제등극을 축하하기 위한 음악을 연주함으로써 원래의 기록과는 다르게 재현했다. 이 연구를 통해 기록과 재현 사이에 어떤 해석이 개입되는지 논의하였다.
Abstract
This paper examines the performance of King Kojong's Ascension Ceremony restored and reproduced by the National Gugak Center in 2015. The performance in 2015 selected and staged some key rites among the 23 rites recorded in Kojong Taerye Ŭigwe. This paper analyzes the contents of Kojong Taerye Ŭigwe, which is a record of King Kojong's accession to the emperor in October 1897. This paper also examines the contents of the main rites that were actually performed, the process of restoration, and the results of restoration. In 1897, during the coronation ceremony of Emperor Kojong, music could not be played during various ceremonies because it was during the state mourning period for Empress Myŏngsŏng. However, it was reproduced differently from the original record by playing music on the stage reproduced by the National Gugak Center. Through this study, I discuss what kind of interpretation intervenes between record and representation.
