본 연구는 일제강점기 전기(1910-1930)에 이루어진 군악 관련 자료와 안확(安廓, 1986-1946)의 저술인 ｢천년전의 조선군악｣(1930)을 중심으로 그의 군악 인식을 고찰한 것이다. 먼저 마지막 군악대였던 내취의 소속 변동과 군악대의 해산, 음반 및 신문 기사 등 민간에서의 연주 사례, 동시기 학자들의 서술을 검토하여 당시 군악이 ‘폐절된 음악’으로 인식되었던 시대적 배경을 확인하였다. 이어 안확의 저술을 분석하여, 고취악과 군악을 동일시하며 그 기원을 1,000년 전으로 소급하고자 하였던 의도를 파악하였다. 안확은 촉탁 근무를 통해 축적한 이해와 문헌 고증, 구군악사(舊軍樂師)의 증언 등을 바탕으로 <취타>를 ‘황풍악(皇風樂)’으로 제시하고, 이에 ‘왕의 행진곡’이라는 상징성을 부여하였다. 그 과정에서 고취악과 군악을 혼동하여 인식한 것은 개념적 한계를 드러내지만, 그럼에도 그의 서술 및 인식은 군악을 단순히 ‘단절된 전통’이 아닌 역사적 맥락 속 우리의 음악으로 재위치시키고자 했다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
Abstract
This study examines Ahn Hwak’s perception of military music, focusing on his essay “Korean Military Music a Thousand Years Ago”(1930), in the context of materials on military music produced during the early colonial period (1910-1930). First, the dissolution and institutional transfer of the last royal military band (Naech’wi, 內吹), records of civilian performances such as phonograph recordings and newspaper reports, and contemporary scholarly accounts are reviewed to reveal the historical background in which military music came to be regarded as a discontinued tradition. The analysis then turns to Ahn’s essay, in which he equated Koch’wiak (鼓吹樂) with military music and sought to trace its origins back a thousand years. Anhwak presented Ch’wita as Hwangp’ungak based on his understanding of Korean music, literature, and interviews with a Military Band Musician, and gave it the symbolism of the King's March. In this process, his conflation of Koch’wiak and military music reveals conceptual limitations. Nevertheless, his account reflects an attempt to define military music not merely as a discontinued tradition, but as part of Korea’s historical musical culture, thereby providing a significant point of departure for subsequent discourse on military music during the colonial period.
