Abstract

The Sa-ak (賜樂, royally bestowed music) refers to a system in which the king dispatched court musicians to perform music in order to commend the meritorious service of officials or to celebrate auspicious occasions. This study examines the practice of Sa-ak during the early Chosŏn period, which has received relatively little scholarly attention, and investigates the process through which it became institutionalized. Although Sa-ak was closely associated with Sayŏn (賜宴, royally bestowed banquets), it was not always conducted in conjunction with it. In cases where only a banquet was granted without the accompanying bestowal of music, this signified a reduced form of royal reward. At times, Sa-ak was bestowed within the royal palace rather than outside its walls, particularly in connection with royal ceremonies, in order to share in the festive atmosphere of such events. As time progressed, the composition of participants became increasingly diverse, allowing a greater number of people to experience music granted by the king. Sa-ak can be classified according to the purpose of its bestowal: Sa-ak for honoring the elderly (養老), for the state examinations (科擧) and encouraging scholarly achievement, for rewarding meritorious service (功績), for farewell (餞別) and the pacification of frontier regions (鎭撫), and for consoling royal relatives (宗親). It becomes evident that Sa-ak reflected the principal policies and modes of governance of each reigning monarch within the sociopolitical context of the time in the early Chosŏn period. In determining the grade of Sa-ak during the early Chosŏn period, not only Akkong (樂工) but also the number of Yŏgi (女妓) and their specific functions were key factors. This indicates that the differentiation of Sa-ak was applied not only to the scale of the performers but also to the content of the performances themselves. In the case of Sa-ak under King Sŏngjong’s reign, it is likely that such performances included dances such as Ch’omu (初舞), Kwangsumu (廣袖舞), Abak (牙拍) and Hyangbal (響鈸).
