본 연구는 17-18세기 프랑스 형식주의 정원의 토대가 된 다양한 이론을 탐색하고, 이를 통해 이 시기정원관의 변천 과정을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 형식주의 정원 조성의 대표적인 인물로 알려져 있는 르 노트르가 남긴 저술이 전무한 상황에서, 이를 정리하여 이론화한 데잘리에 다르장빌 등의 논고는매우 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 원전 연구를 통해, 형식주의 정원 설계에서 중시되던 요소들의 변화를 살펴보고, 특성을 파악했다. 정원의 목적은 점차 실용적인 것에서 즐거움을 위한 것으로 변화했고, 이는 대상지의 장소의 선정과 설계, 그리고 당대 기술 활용에 반영되었다. 프랑스 형식주의 정원의 최우선 목적은 아름다움과 즐거움의 정원을 조성하는 것이었고, 이는 다시 각 부분과 요소, 전체 구성에서의 질서 잡힌 다양함의추구로 요약된다. 이를 통해 프랑스 정원은1 7세기 후반에 이르러 고유의 양식을 이루었다.
Abstract
This study aims to investigate various garden theories of the 17th and 18th century in France, and to survey its development. While André Le Nôtre had left few writings and documents, theories by contemporary garden theorists like Dézallier d’Argenville are significant. Critical readings of original texts showed the changes in the key factors of formal garden design as well as its characteristics. Furthermore, it reveals the transition of the garden creation: from the utilitarian to pleasure. This change is reflected in the site selection and design, and use of technologies. The priority of the French formal design was the creation of beauty and pleasure in garden, and the pursuit of ‘ordered variety.’ The French garden came to develop its own artistic style in the second half of the 17th century.
