로소 피오렌티노의 <천사들과 함께 있는 죽은 그리스도>(1525-1526)는 산세폴크로의 주교 레오나르도 토르나부오니의 의뢰로 그려진 제단화로, 그리스도의 나체를 치밀한 조형적 기교로 강렬하게 드러낸흔치 않은 사례이다. 그리스도의 관능적인 자태와 그를 감각의 대상으로 파악하는 천사들의 다소 기이한 태도는 전통적인 ‘비탄의 그리스도’ 도상과의 괴리를 입증하지만 그렇다고 해서 이를 로마의 초기 매너리즘, 엄밀히 말하자면 1520년대 중반에 출현한 ‘클레멘스’ 양식을 특징짓는 것으로 섣불리 결론 내릴 수는 없다. 이에 본 연구는 작품의 맥락적 관계에 주목하면서 논의범위를 테아티노회의 창립부터 가톨릭 개혁의 흐름이 일어날 때까지로 넓히고, 도상의 특수성을 보다 다각적인 차원에서 규명하고자 하였다. 연구의 주요 결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 테아티노회의 회원이었던 주문자 토르나부오니는 영구 성체조배를 도입한 수도회를 본받아 전례적인 기능을 수행할 수 있는 작품을 로소에게 권고한것으로 보이는데, 이는 성찬에서의 그리스도의 실재적 임재가 그 핵심 주제임을 짐작케 한다. 둘째, 당시통용되던 신플라톤주의 사상이 화가에게 영향을 미쳤을 개연성을 고려해볼 때, 그리스도의 관능성은 관념의 차원에서 접근이 가능하다. 이때 황홀경에 취한 그리스도의 육신은 죽음의 기억을 지우고 영혼을얻음으로써 부활의 과정을 겪고 있는 것으로 이해된다. 마지막으로, 이 작품을 개혁적 측면에서 조명해볼 수 있는 이유는 16세기 전반에 나타난 ‘죽은 그리스도’ 도상의 부흥이 가톨릭 개혁을 예고하는 중요한 지표로 받아들여졌기 때문이다.
Abstract
Rosso Fiorentino’s Dead Christ with Angels (1525-1526) is an altarpiece painted for the bishop of Sansepolcro, Leonardo Tornabuoni, a rare example which exhibits Christ’s nudity through meticulous artistry. The sensual figure of Christ and angels’ mysterious manner expose estrangement from a traditional ‘Man of Sorrows’. However it’s impossible to conclude hastily that it characterizes the early Roman Mannerism, technically the ‘Clementine’ style flourished in the mid-1520s. This study investigates the iconographic characteristics in the multilateral dimension, widening the range of discussion from the Theatines’ establishment until the pre-Counter-Reformation. The result is as follows. First, Tornabuoni, a member of the Theatine order, probably recommended Rosso the liturgical function of the altarpiece from the Theatines having instituted the perpetual Eucharistic adoration. Christ’s real presence in the Eucharist is thus guessed to be the core theme of the work. Second, the Neoplatonic influence on Rosso permits an ideal approach to Christ’s sensuality. In this context, the body of Christ in ecstasy may be going through the Resurrection process. Finally, the reason we can examine this painting in terms reformative is that the revival of ‘Dead Christ’ in the first half of the 16th century was considered as an important indicator foreshadowing the Catholic Reformation.
