Abstract
The blue-and-green landscape refers to the colored landscape painted mainly with mineral blue and green pigment, and its history goes back to the Tang dynasty although the term qinglu shanshui began to appear during the Yuan period. The blue-and-green landscape has been usually considered the works of professional painters, however, extant paintings suggest that it became an appropriate mode for the literati painter. This article examines extant works and relevant records on Song and Yuan painters to asses their achievements and roles in the development of literati blue-and-green landscape. Their paintings demonstrate that Song literati painters established unique characteristics of blue-and-green landscapewhich reflect the artist’s state of mind, the aesthetic principles, and the noble character of the literati. The early Yuan masters’ use of blue-and-green manner as expressions of archaism and description of artist’s realm which attained transcendence in a period of adversity, laid the foundations for the development of the literati blue-and-green landscape tradition. More in-depth and multidimensional study on the Song and Yuan blue-and-green landscape would enable us to illuminate how the colored landscape manner was accepted and transformed in literati painting genre and continued into the later period, and contribute to a deeper understanding of various aspects of Ming and Qing blue-and-green landscapes.
