Abstract

The early twelfth century marks one of the major turning points in Chinese landscape painting history, in which monumental landscape painting style of the Northern Song developed into a simplified, more intimate Southern Song style. This article examines stylistic changes of the landscape painting by careful analysis of extant paintings which are securely dated to the period by internal and external evidences such as related documents and literary sources. Landscape Presented to Hao Xuangming on the Occasion of His Being Dispatched to Qin by court painter Hu Shunchun, Rowing Home on the Snow River, Mission for Negotiating Northern Boundaries with the Jin, both by anonymous painters of the Emperor Huizong's painting academy display the influence from Fan Kuan, Yen Wenqui, and Mi Fu and the dwindling influence of Guo Xi. Stylistic comparisons of these paintings with the earlier monumental style paintings clearly reflect technical and stylistic changes and diversity that occurred in landscape painting in the early twelfth century, which began under the patronage of emperor Huizong. In his Wind in the Pines amid Ten Thousand Valleys, dated 1124, Li Tang moved painting style a step closer to the intimate landscapes of the Southern Song period by exchanging the immeasurable vastness of the earlier Northern Song landscape composition for a more limited, more realistic view and creating new brush and ink technique for depicting landscape motifs. Li Tang's style provided the stylistic ground for the development of the Southern Song academy landscape led by Ma Yuan and Xia Gui. Literati painters Li Gongnian, Qiao Zhongchang, and Mi Youren continued the landscape tradition formed by literati painters one generation ago. Their landscape paintings demonstrate unique ways of depicting landscape motifs with highly individual techniques which distinguish them from the professional painters' style. As more in-depth studies on individual works and intellectual background influenced the early twelfth century landscape ideas and aesthetic change are carried out, they would provides insight into better understanding of the landscape painting in the succeeding Jin and Yuan dynasties.
