유아 미디어 리터러시교육의 효과에 대한 질적 고찰

본 연구는 유아 미디어 리터러시교육 프로그램의 효과를 탐색하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 수업 관찰과 유아가 자유 선택 시간에 만든 작품을 수집하였다. 연구 대상은 만 5～6세 유아 26명이었으며 미디어 리터러시교육 프로그램은 8주 동안 유치원 활동에 통합되어 운영되었다. 유아의 발화와 유아가 창작한 작품이 수집되었으며 미디어 리터러시교육의 목표에 따라 자료를 분석하였다. 분석 결과 미디어 리터러시교육 프로그램을 경험한 유아들은 영상 언어와 제작 과정에 대해 이해하게 되었고, 제작 과정에 대한 지식을 근거로 미디어 작품을 비평하게 되었다. 또한 유아가 창작한 미디어 작품의 분석을 통해 유아들은 미디어 작품에 자신의 지식을 반영하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 통해 미디어 리터러시교육이 유아들의 미디어 수용력, 미디어 비평력, 그리고 미디어 창작력에 영향을 미침을 알 수 있었고, 특히 창작 중심의 미디어 교육 경험이 유아들로 하여금 미디어에 대한 이해력과 비평력을 기르도록 도와주었음을 알게 되었다.

Abstract

This study explores the effects of a media literacy program on young children’s media literacy learning. The subjects were a total of 26 kindergartens five and six year- old children. The research, implemented for 8 weeks, was integrated into their daily kindergarten activities. Data were collected by participant observation and media works created by the children which were then analyzed for the study. The analysis of the young children’s conversations indicates that they understood media language, built concepts regarding animation, and increased their understanding of how the animation movies they saw were filmed and how the cartoon characters moved in animation like real human beings. Furthermore, the analysis of the children’s talk indicates that they appeared to evaluate the media works based on their own knowledge and criteria. The analysis of the children’s works of art shows that, in the process of creating their own products, the children reflected on the concepts they were building through participating in the program. The changes in the children’s media litera cy and their understanding of a variety of media aspects were observed in their consistent interest in using the camera for photography, for example, or the media language they reflected in their creation of advertisements as well as in their making of a story board for a cartoon. Future investigations are needed to examine these and other aspects of young children’s media literacy in more detail.
