Abstract
This study looks at the number of picturebooks read by children at home for a one-week period and analyzes them for references to mental state expressions. The subjects were 224 children (3 to 6-years of age) and the study was based on questionnaires given to each child's parents. Results indicate that children read an average of 11.75 picturebooks at home for a week and do by the order of 3, 4, 6, and 5 years old. The more siblings children have, by the order of 2, 1, 0, the more they read picturebooks. Mental state expressions in the picturebooks read at home appeared on the average of 14.46 per picturebook, and 1 in every 5.20 sentences. Internal states terms appear most frequently, followed by moral evaluation and obligation and by false belief in the subordinate categories of mental state expressions. With regard to the genres of the picturebooks, folktales contain more mental state expressions than creative tales. Since, as this study shows, children's picturebooks contain a great many mental state expressions, reading picturebooks at home would be a very effective way to facilitate a child’s development of theory of mind.
