교사가 지각한 유아 다문화교육의 내용

본 연구는 개념도를 사용하여 유아교사가 지각하는 다문화교육의 내용과 그 수준을 살펴보는 것이 그 목적이다. 본 연구대상은 대구와 경북지역 유아교육기관에 근무 중인 72명의 교사들이다. 교사들이 지각하고 있는 유아 다문화교육의 내용과 수준은 개념도의 내용과 밀도를 통해 분석되었다. 선행연구 고찰을 통해 유아 다문화교육의 내용을 인종, 자연환경과 문화, 성과 성적지향, 사회경제적 계층과 소비주의, 장애와 비장애, 그리고 가족구조 6가지로 선정하였다. 연구결과, 유아교사들은 6가지 다문화교육내용 영역 중 자연환경과 문화 그리고 인종을 가장 빈번하게 지각하였으며, 이는 우리나라 유아 다문화교육이 여행자 혹은 관광식 접근을 취하고 있다는 선행연구들과 일치하였다. 개념도의 밀도를 분석한 결과 유아 교사들은 비교적 많은 수의 하위개념들을 지각하고 있었다. 요약하면, 교사들은 유아 다문화교육의 6가지 내용 영역 중 자연환경과 문화 그리고 인종에 관하여서는 양적으로 높은 수준의 지식들을 가지고 있는 반면 나머지 내용 영역들에 대하여서는 거의 지각하고 있지 않았다. 본 연구에서 통해 유아 다문화교육 내용에 관하여 교사들이 국외 문화의 다양성만 강조하는 내용에만 편중하여 지각하는 반면 국내에서 유아들이 경험하고 있는 다양한 사회내 문화들을 깊이 있게 지각하고 있지 못함으로써 현장에서 균형적이고 포괄적인 다문화교육의 실천에 한계가 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 향후 유아의 실제 삶에서 경험하게 되는 다양한 문화에 대한 재정립을 통해 유아 다문화 교육 내용의 범주를 설정함과 동시에 지속적으로 현직연수를 통해 교육해야 할 필요가 있다
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the perception of early childhood teachers about what type of content should be included in multicultural education for young children. Concept mapping was used to investigate early childhood teachers' knowledge about multicultural education for young children in terms of appropriate and developmental levels for presentation. Participates, 72 teachers in Taegu and Kyungpook Province, were presented with a model of multicultural content areas, drawn from recent early childhood education research and literature and based on six basic conceptual contexts: 1) race 2) social class and consumerism, 3) culture, 4) gender and sexual orientation, 5) )abilities and disabilities, and 6) family structure, The teachers’ responses and comments were analyzed in terms of their perception and knowledge about the varied content areas. The results showed a high frequency in choosing the subordinate concepts of culture and natural environment, and race as important early childhood multicultural topics. However, the results also showed that the teachers did not perceive abilities and disabilities, gender and sexual orientation, social class and consumerism, or family structure as important content areas for young children’s multicultural education. This disparity between the teachers’ knowledge and perceptions and research informed early childhood multicultural education principles and practices points to a need for both more research and better dissemination of research results in order for them to teach balanced and more inclusive early childhood multicultural education contexts.
