Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of parents' attitudes toward outdoor play and tolerance for risky play on children's perceived motor competence through children’s participation in outdoor play and risky play. Participants for this study were 230 children aged 5~7 and their parents living in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon of South Korea. The results were as follows. First, the effect of the mother's attitude toward outdoor play on children's perceived motor competence was fully mediated by children's participation in outdoor play. Second, the effect of the father's tolerance for risky play on the children's perceived motor competence was fully mediated by children's participation in risky play. In conclusion, to help children participate more in outdoor play and risky play as well as to increase the perception of their motor competence, it is important for mothers to have supportive attitudes toward outdoor play and fathers to show more tolerance toward risky play.
