Abstract

This study aims to identify the latent profiles of peer play behaviors exhibited by young children in daycare settings, based on dimensions of play interaction, disruptive behavior, and withdrawn behavior. Additionally, it examines differences in the emotional regulation abilities of the children and the play participation attitudes of their mothers according to the profiles. The sample, recruited from daycare centers in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, consisted of 316 pairs of children aged 3-5 and their mothers. Latent profile analysis, chi-square analysis, and one-way ANOVAs were conducted. The results revealed three distinct profiles: competent children (48%), attempting children (41%), and disconnected children (11%). There were more girls in the competent children group, whereas more boys were in the attempting and disconnected groups. No significant relationship was found between the three types and age. Significant differences were found between competent and disconnected children in self-regulation domains of emotional regulation, and all three groups differed significantly in other-regulation domains. Moreover, the mothers of disconnected children showed significantly lower levels of play participation attitudes compared to those of competent or attempting children. These findings provide valuable insights into the characteristics of children and their mothers based on the types of peer play behavior, and they underscore the importance of designing targeted parent education programs for young children.
