Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine kindergarten teachers’ perceptions of the importance and performance regarding young children’s participation rights, and to derive implications for future improvements and support through an IPA (Importance –Performance Analysis) matrix. To achieve this, a survey was conducted with 293 kindergarten teachers currently working in early childhood education institutions. The collected data were analyzed using paired-sample t-tests and the IPA technique. The findings are as follows. First, it was found that the average scores of importance perceived by teachers were higher than the average scores of performance in seven areas and all 43 items. Second, according to the results of the IPA matrix analysis, three domains were located in the first quadrant and three in the third quadrant. In addition, one domain was placed in the second quadrant, and no domains were found in the fourth quadrant. At the item level, 22 items (51.2%) fell into the first quadrant, 2 items (4.7%) into the second quadrant, 17 items (39.5%) into the third quadrant, and 2 items (4.7%) into the fourth quadrant. Taken together, the domain- and item-level results indicate that the areas classified in the third quadrant (low priority) require long-term improvement strategies and institutional support to enhance teachers’ performance.
