Abstract
This study analyzed young children’s imaginative narratives that emerged during the story-making process. Over a 10-week period, from May 21 to July 23, 2024, eight five-year-old children were explored through participant observation and in-depth interviews as they engaged in spontaneous story creation. In the story-making sessions, children expressed their spontaneous imaginations through words and gestures, while the researcher immediately recorded their narratives in real time. Data sources included transcripts from participant observations and interviews, the children’s narrative product, and the researcher’s journal, all of which were repeatedly read and cross-examined to derive meaningful categories. The analysis identified four key aspects of children’s imaginative narratives: the dynamic force of image generation, repetition and variation sustaining narrative vitality, the regeneration and creation of peer culture, and the blurred boundaries between reality and imagination. Theses findings reveal that children’s expressions reconstruct emotions and experiences across the boundaries of reality and fantasy. This study suggests that teachers should recognize children’s imaginative narratives as a form of creative language and engage with them accordingly.
