Abstract
This study analyzed a total of 10,438 master’s theses, doctoral dissertations, and journal articles related to early childhood education published in Korea from 1970 to August 2019, in order to examine changes and characteristics in research trends using descriptive statistics. The results are as follows: First, 6,375 master's theses (61.07%) were analyzed, with the highest number appearing in the 2000s. Academic journal articles numbered 3,163 (30.3%), showing the highest concentration in the 2010s. In contrast, doctoral dissertations accounted for only 899 papers (8.6%), the lowest proportion, though their number gradually increased from the 2000s onward. Second, regarding research types, practical research accounted for the largest proportion (49.66%), with active studies centered on curricula and subject areas. Third, in terms of research methods, quantitative research was dominant (67.9%), particularly focusing on experimental and survey methods. Fourth, research subjects, studies on human subjects (e.g., young children, teachers, and parents) comprised 88.7%, with research on young children being the most prevalent. In contrast, studies on non-human subjects (e.g., environment, literature, and programs) accounted for only 11.3%. This study is significant in that it systematically traces the development of early childhood education research in Korea over the past five decades and provides foundational data for setting future research directions, policymaking, and theoretical advancement.
