Abstract

This study aimed to develop a digital competence scale for young children aged 3 to 5 and to verify its validity and reliability. Based on prior research and a Delphi study, three subdomains consisting of digital literacy, digital communication and participation, and digital well-being were identified as the theoretical framework. A total of 38 preliminary items were initially constructed and refined through expert review. The main survey was conducted with 303 children enrolled in early childhood education institutions located in Seoul, Chungcheong, and Gangwon regions, using teacher-rated assessments. The collected data were examined through item analysis, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and reliability testing. As a result, the final scale consisted of 25 items across three factors. Both the overall and subscale reliability coefficients exceeded the generally accepted standards. The model fit indices (TLI, CFI, RMSEA) indicated an acceptable level of model adequacy. This scale can serve as a foundational tool for assessing young children’s digital competence and holds significance as a basis for educational practices that support digital literacy and digital well-being in early childhood.
