Abstract

Flipped learning is one of the approaches supporting learner-centered learning and practical applications as well as academic research on flipped learning have been gradually increasing nowadays. Given that there exists sufficient empirical evidence of flipped learning, exploration of related variables that can affect learning outcomes in flipped learning environment should be conducted at this moment. This study investigated the effects of self-regulation, teaching presence, perceived interaction on learning outcomes as well as the mediating effects of perceived interaction in a flipped learning environment. Also, this study divided teaching presence into ‘design and organization’ and ‘directed facilitation’ to explore the role of teaching presence in detail. The results reported that self-regulation predicted perceived interaction. Also design and organization and self-regulation predicted achievement and directed facilitation, perceived interaction and self-regulation predicted satisfaction. Lastly perceived interaction mediated the relationship between self-regulation and satisfaction and the relationship between directed facilitation and satisfaction. The results of this study implied that there should be strategies which can develop and improve self-regulation level to promote learners’ interaction and also instructor should utilize different way of improving learners’ cognitive and affective learning outcomes. Finally, instructor should understand the complex mechanism of flipped learning process considering interaction. Thus, this study provided implication for instructional design and strategies that can be used in flipped learning context.
