Abstract
This study examined the effects of cognitive regulation strategy delivery methods (avatar-based vs. prompt-based) and task types (conceptual, application, and problem-solving) on learners’ engagement, emotion, and learning achievement in a Metaverse learning environment. A Metaverse-based environment was designed to incorporate cognitive regulation strategies to support learning. Sixty-eight college students participated in the experiment and were randomly assigned to either the avatar or the prompt condition. Participants sequentially completed three types of tasks, and after each task, they responded to a learning engagement survey. Learning achievement was measured before and after the session, and facial expressions were recorded during learning to assess emotional valence. Repeated measures ANOVA and MANOVA were used for data analysis, and emotion was analyzed using facial recognition software developed by iMotions. The results showed that the prompt group exhibited significantly higher cognitive engagement, whereas the avatar group demonstrated more positive emotional valence and higher recognition-based achievement. Regarding task type, problem-solving tasks elicited the highest overall engagement across both groups. Furthermore, a significant interaction effect was found between task type and strategy delivery method: the avatar group showed significantly higher emotional valence during the application task, while no significant differences were observed for the other tasks. These findings highlight the importance of considering the interaction between task complexity and regulation strategy when designing compelling Metaverse-based learning experiences.
