이 글은 역사적 맥락을 감안한 플라톤 헌정철학의 연구이다. 플라톤의 주저 <국가>와 <법률> 그리고 자전적 기록 <편지들>을 당시 희랍의 역사적 배경에서 고찰해 봄으로써 그 헌정철학의 지향점을 찾고자 하였다. 당시 희랍은 동족 간의 내전이 심화되고 이민족의 위협이 증대되는 상태였으며, 플라톤은 그런 상황에서 희랍의 여러 정치체제들의 문제점을 분석 비판하고, 나아가 극복할 수 있는 대안을 찾으려고 노력하였다. 이 글은 특히 플라톤 자신이 직접 시칠리아에 올바른 헌정체제를 수립하기 위한 정치활동에 나섰으며, 또 시칠리아에서 희랍인들 사이의 평화와 연대를 위해 헌신하였다는 점에 주목하였다. 이 글은 플라톤의 헌정철학을 그와 같은 고뇌와 염원의 산물로 이해하고자 하였다. 그리하여 플라톤 헌정철학의 궁극적 목적을 희랍 도시국가들 사이의 또 개별 도시국가 내에서의 분란과 적대를 종식하여, 희랍 세계의 연대를 확보하는 데에 있다고 보았다. 이 글은 그런 관점에서 <국가>와 <법률>을 당시 희랍 세계의 공동체 붕괴를 우려하며, 공동체 회복을 위한 근본 원리와 제도적 대안을 제시하기 위한 저작으로 파악하였다. 즉 <국가>와 <법률>에 나타난 플라톤의 헌정철학을 당시 희랍 헌정체제들인 과두정, 민주정, 참주정들의 결함들을 교정하고, 희랍인들의 평화와 우애를 회복시키기 위한 헌정 개조론으로 이해하였다. 그런 개혁을 위하여 플라톤은 먼저 이상적 통치체제로서 공동체와 혼연일체가 된 철인 통치를 제시하였고, 다음으로 현실적 대안으로는 각각의 체제가 극단으로 치우치는 것을 방지하는 혼합정체를 제시하였다고 보았다.
Abstract
This article is a study on the historical context and mission of Plato’s Republic and Laws. The author tried to understand Plato’s constitutional thought in the connection with the current historical background and Plato’s autobiographical letters. Plato’s political thoughts in Republic and Laws are considered as criticisms and alternatives of the ancient Greek states. Specifically Plato himself ventured to establish a good constitution in Syracuse of Sicily. First, Plato aimed at an ideal monarchy ruled by Dinonysius II with the help of Dion. Second, Plato wanted to ameliorate the Syracuse politics in order to reconcile both of hostile parties. Eventually, Plato’s goal is regarded as maintaining the friendship and peace between Greek peoples to defend Greek identity against the barbarian invasion.
