Abstract
This study explores the market entry process of a latecomer firm. It outlines a dynamic business-network model of foreign market entry and internationalization. Compared with received internationalization process theory it moves focus from unilateral experiential learning and foreign market commitment to bilateral learning and commitments in business relationships between supplier and customer firms. It also assumes that the firm, when developing a business relationship, becomes involved in a wider business network. The study presents an in-depth case study of Samsung Electronics’ entry into the British market. The case study considers three areas of learning and commitment: geographical cover of the market, organization functions committed to the market and number and importance of products supplied in the market. It shows also the role of business relationships in the development of the three areas. The case demonstrates that in Samsung’s successful, rapid British market entry learning, and in particular, business network learning, plays an important role. It also indicates that commitments are gradual.
