Abstract

Hegel's claim that the sensual form of art stands in opposition to thought, and that art belongs to the realm of conceptual thought, makes it difficult for readers to understand. The possibility of solving this difficult problem can be sought through the well-known thesis of the ‘pastness of art’. This thesis, which claims that the function of art has also changed according to changes in intellectual, cultural or social history, seems to make a strict distinction between the era in which art existed independently of concepts or thought, and the era in which art is conceptually understood. However, it is difficult to fully understand Hegel's argument on this understanding alone. In particular, if the distinction between the two epochs is read as a distinction between the epoch of enjoyment and the epoch of thought, it can easily be understood as if the attitude to art itself were thoroughly divided according to epoch. The presence or absence of artistic thought and enjoyment should not be the criterion for drawing the line between the two eras. There was artistic thought in the past, and artistic enjoyment is still possible “today”, as Hegel says. But it is only “today” that philosophical thinking about art has become possible. Hegel, however, did not claim that art could have been produced or accepted in the past without the thinking of the human mind. In other words, the thesis of the past does not imply the diagnosis that the enjoyment of art has been completely replaced by the thinking about art. Art, as a highly intellectual culture that leads people to think, reveals the self-reference of the mind. Therefore, the enjoyment of art is also a place of thinking, where human self-reflection takes place. Regardless of time and place, art producers and art appreciators have each thought through art in a specific way. Art has always been produced and accepted along with human thought. Philosophical reflection on art began in earnest only in modern times, but human thinking has always been possible in art, and the enjoyment of art is still possible today.
