정지용과 『自由詩人』

Abstract

This article aims to be the new beginning of a study on Jeong Ji-yong’s early poetry by opening his original texts published in 『Jiyu-shijin(自由詩人)』 to the public for the first time. Published by students of Doshisha(同志社) University, 『Jiyu-shijin(自由詩人)』 is the Japanese literary coterie magazine of which the first issue was published in December 1925 and ceased with the 5th issue in May 1926. 『Jiyu-shijin(自由詩人)』 is a monthly publication issued by the members of 『Machi(街)』 which is the students’ literary magazine of Doshisha University and is known as the first magazine that published Jeong Ji-yong’s work. Jeong Ji-yong joined 『Jiyu-shijin(自由詩人)』 as a member and one of the editors from the very beginning until its last issue, posting 19 poets and 3 essays in total. 9 of the Jeong Ji-yong’s original works and their translations (translated by the author of this article) are revealed in this article. They are from the first and 4th issues of 『Jiyu-shijin(自由詩人)』 which are the only original texts available of his works. 「Reptilian(はちゆう類動物)」, one of the 9 poets, bears a striking similarity to 「Reptilian(爬蟲類動物)」, a Korean poet published in the first issue of 『Hak-jo(學潮)』. The other 8 poets are firstly disclosed in this article and have no similarity to any others. Jeong Ji-yong made his official debut in Japan to 『Kindai-hukei(近代風景)』. This article provides a valuable opportunity to look into his writing career during his era of Doshisha University prior to his debut. It is meaningful in that various aspects of his early career are addressed as well as it opens the significant possibility to understand better his works written in Korean.
