Abstract

Han Kang's Nobel Prize in Literature raises the issue of identity in the restoration of non-Western/non-mainstream histories in the midst of 'globalization'. And it is also a discursive request of how Korean literature should address the illumination of these non-Western identities or the return of internalized orientalism. At the same time, the process of non-western/non-mainstream languages being 'translated into English' and placed in the universal arena raises the question of how to resolve the issue of localities that refuse to be subsumed or identified with the central power at the level of translation. How can literature seek to 'communicate' without going through the central power of the 'standard language'? This article attempts to answer this question through a comparative analysis of the fictional worlds of two non-Western Nobel Prize winners in literature, Abdulrazak Gurnah and Han Kang, in the 2020s, when identity politics and political correctness are being critically discursed, paying attention to their visibility of fractured memories and marginal identities.
