확장된 음악으로서의 소리를 다루는 학제 간 소리 연구는 경로 혹은 경유 공간을 의미하는 ‘사이 공간’의 소리 환경에 서서히 주목하고 있다. 이러한 동향에 부응하며 본 연구는 세계 이동의 흐름을 잘 반영하는 국제공항을 통해 사이 공간 음향 환경의 구조를 탐구하고자 한다. 구체적으로 어떻게 사이 공간으로서의 국제공항의 공간적 상황이 해당 음향 환경에 반영되는지 알아보고자 한다. 그러기 위해서 본 연구는 인천국제공항의 사례 연구를 활용하고자 한다. 이러한 연구는 아직 소리 연구 분야에서 본격 시작되지 않았다. 본 논문은 사이 공간을 거주 공간과 이동 공간이 교차하는 공간이자 사람이 자신의 정체성을 ‘전환적인 방식’으로 찾으며 ‘이동 중 거주’ 혹은 ‘거류’(去留)하는 공간으로 이해한다. 나아가 이러한 공간의 소리 환경을 ‘거류 공간의 입체 음향체’로 개념화한다. 인천국제공항 사례 연구에 따르면 인천국제공항에는 거주 행위와 관련된 소리와 이동 행위 관련된 소리가 두드러진다. 이러한 ‘거주음’과 ‘이동음’은 각각 인천국제공항 음향체의 후경과 전경을 강화시킨다. 그러한 가운데 사이 공간으로서의 인천공항의 공간적 상황이 인천공항의 소리들의 ‘입체적 복합 구조’에 반영된다. 따라서 인천공항의 소리 환경의 구조는 ‘전환적’인 사이 공간의 상황 속에서 구성되는 입체적 복합 구조로 이해할 수 있다. 본 연구는 오늘날 사이 공간의 상황과 소리 환경 간의 긴밀한 관련성을 밝히며 현대 사회의 단면을 조명할 수 있기를 기대한다.
Abstract
An Interdisciplinary sound studies which deals with sound as extensive music has gradually paid attention to the soundscape of ‘in-between’ spaces which mean routes or intermediate points. Complying with this trend, this paper aims to examine the acoustic environment’s structure of in-between spaces through an examination of international airports that reflect global movement adequately. Specifically, it intends to explore how the spatial situation of international airports as in-between spaces is reflected in their soundscape. To this end, this research will look at a case study of Incheon International Airport. Research conducted in this way has not full-scale emerged in the field of sound studies. This study understands an in-between space as a space which dwelling and moving spaces intersect, and one which one ‘dwells and moves by turns’ in an attempt to find one’s own identity in a ‘transformative’ way. Additionally, this research conceptualizes its soundscape as a ‘three-dimensional acoustic body of a space of dwelling-in-motion’. A case study of Incheon Airport reveals that dwelling-related sounds and moving-related ones are noticeable in the airport. These two types of sounds intensify the background and foreground of the acoustic body of the airport. The spatial situation of the airport as an in-between space is reflected in the ‘three-dimensional complex structure’ that the sounds resonated in the airport form. Accordingly, this study argues that the soundscape structure of the airport is the ‘three-dimensional complex structure’ formed within the spatial situation of the ‘transformative’ in-between space. This paper hopes that it can illuminate one aspect of contemporary society by clarifying the associations between today’s in-between spaces and their soundscapes.
