Abstract

This paper examines rhythmic-metric periodicity, which is variously presented in the movement of Igor Stravinsky’s Marche du Soldat from L’Histoire du Soldat, as well as Three Pieces for String Quartet by applying “Metrical Dissonances” founded and elaborated by Harold Krebs. Many scholars have noticed how the repetitive rhythmic-melodic fragment in Stravinsky’s work proceeds to an ostinato pattern, and further is placed against the bar-line that causes a different interpretation of the given time signature. In these two works, when the ostinato recurs throughout the movement at irregular intervals, each instrument (or voice) establishes its own stratum of periodicity that came from rhythmic and melodic repetitions, or a group of the same pitch-class set. Although Krebs himself has applied his analytical method only to works in the Romantic era, this paper aims to reveal that his concept would also work well in Stravinsky’s early works where multi-layered rhythmic and melodic structures are prevalent.
