Abstract

In Igor Stravinsky’s works composed in 1920-60s, I found that he definitely used the art of counterpoint techniques in various way. I concentrated on modern aspects of art of counterpoint by Stravinsky, which is a quasi-polyphonic designing of imitated subjects, new ways of modifying them and on the connection between idea of counterpoint with – so characteristic for Igor Stravinsky – technique of mounting and “architectonic form” underlined by analogy and contrast of the quality of sound connected with a kind of executive means and their articulation. In his statements, articles as well as in his autobiography he underlined that “the form in my music derives from counterpoint, in my opinion pure counterpoint is the only possible material, from which you can reach strong and lasting music forms”. Imitative polyphony in Stravinsky’s music has different functions in the formal conception of the given work. Polyphonic constructions related to the idea of fugue or canon appear usually in some part of the cyclic work or in collection of variations. The rule of imitative polyphony is also the base of creating the subject for the cycle of variations. The composer continued also the tradition of the baroque polyphonic variations. In the works composed in 1920-1960s, Stravinsky preferred polyphonic constructions related - explicit or implicit - to the rule of fugue in various ways he developed mostly the idea of a canon. The characteristics of the melodic subjects used by Stravinsky in polyphonically shaped musical works, there is a big number of intervals of high range. Similar preferences can be noticed also in music of other composers of 20th-century(especially composed by Vienna classics dodecaphony), but in subjects of Stravinsky those intervals are connected in such a way that in auditive perception they give impression similar to simultaneous leading of two music actions(streams of height) in higher and lower register of height. The sophisticated details of the art of counterpoint, showing the creative discipline and economy of musical measures applied by Stravinsky are noticed often not only in the music sheet, but longer polyphonic constructions are subordinates to the possible to hear relations of similarity and contrast, suggesting – preferred by Stravinsky – connections between musical work and architectonic building with proportional and symmetric shapes, of clear but also sophisticated construction.
