Abstract
This study explores the formal structure of the first movement of Three Songs from Shakespeare based on the melody that highly systemized serial design. In spite of the preliminary observation based on the meter change, the use of row, rhyme of the text clear divided the first movement into five sections, the first movement has four sections. In order to illustrate how the musical elements such as melody, rhythm, and row forms change the formal structure resulted form the preliminary observation, this paper examines the piece focused on the row pattern which resulted to the melodic pattern. In doing so, this study has been guided by the principles of invariance. After analyzing this movement, this study proposes that the ABA of the row pattern and <abcbab> of dyadic pattern explains enough Stravinsky’s row structure. The melody which begin on the same pc and the same sequence of intervals has both pc invariance and intervallic consistency. Stravinsky constructs different sections of a piece from similar setworks of array-derived material, consisting of intricate correspondence of set-classes, patterns of transpositional or symmetrical relations and emphasized pcs and pc set. The recognition of row structure applies to melody structure with the expansion. It helps to understand both a musical style and compositional procedure.
