Abstract

Ligeti's final creative period begins with a four-movement work, Trio für Violine, Horn, und Klavier which was written for Hermann Baumann, Saschko Gawriloff (violin), and Eckart Besch (piano) in 1982. It is perhaps his first substantial work which extensively uses traditional musical features such as ternary form, triads, and expressive melody. Many consider the Horn Trio to be the most complex music Ligeti had written up until 1982. It is a juxtaposition of old and new, static and complex, repetition and perpetual variation. After completing some small works, Ligeti returned to composing for solo piano. He composed a collection of six Étude pour piano: premier livre(1985), and these etudes incorporated many of Ligeti’s new stylistic features. This study examines the specific compositional techniques which Ligeti employs in both rhythm and melody in the 3rd movement of his Trio für Violine, Horn, und Klavier and Étude pour piano: premier livre, “Désordre,” and show how these techniques can be modeled abstractly. I focus especially on how rhythmic structure shapes both surface complexities and deeper formal structures. In the analysis of two works, I also demonstrate that the features of rhythmic and melodic pattern plays a pivotal role, and how Ligeti uses it in order to control and organize not only structure of rhythm and pitch-class but also overall structure of the work.
