Abstract
This paper introduces the current debate in the philosophy of music which took place 2010 between Harry Lehmann (philosopher), Johannes Kreidler (composer) and Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf (composer and musicologist) on music after the digital revolution. First, the positions of the debaters are presented. After that terms like new music, material progress, internal structure, democratization of music are examined in order to gain a better understanding of the respective positions of each debaters. Finally, the debate was commented on referring to current developments in the field of computer technology. The debate on the impact of the digital revolution on music, involving technologies such as new media, sampling and algorithmic composition, amounts to the question of whether machines could be capable of making art and music. The trends in the field of science and technology indicate that computational creativity could become the definitive technology of 21th century. But still, we can not say how the future will look like. Music written and played by humans for humans could still exist in the future. The purpose of this paper is not to decide which party is right or wrong. Rather, it takes the dispute as an opportunity to think about the music of our time.
