Abstract

“The Digital Revolution is Over.” This declaration by Nicholas Negroponte signifies that digital tools and modes of expression no longer herald transformative change, but rather have become ingrained as a kind of zeitgeist. This shift in context is encapsulated by the concept of the postdigital. How, then, does the phenomenon of the postdigital manifest in the realm of music? What are the formal and aesthetic characteristics of postdigital music? This paper begins with these questions and investigates the music of Alberto Bernal (b. 1978), Johannes Kreidler (b. 1980), Maximilian Marcoll (b. 1981), and Anton X. Vasilyev (b. 1984)—composers widely regarded as representative figures of postdigital music. The aim of this study is to explore the transformation in compositional practices and aesthetic features that emerge in the postdigital era. The research reveals that postdigital music, while employing cutting-edge technology, does not pursue novelty for its own sake. Rather, it integrates and reinterprets tradition in multifaceted ways. As such, postdigital music is linked to an intertextual aesthetic that utilizes existing musical materials and traverses the boundaries between digital and analog domains to articulate socially critical messages. The long-standing musical tradition, despite advancements in technology, is neither ignored nor excluded; paradoxically—or perhaps naturally—it continues to serve as a foundational element in the creative process. The development of technology and the history of art do not operate in mutual exclusivity; instead, they engage in a dynamic and creative dialogue, continually shaping the evolution of artistic expression.
