초록

이 논문의 목적은 21세기의 윤리적 환경과 음악이론적 실천의 관계를 탐구하는것이다. 음악이론은 음악적 체계의 구축과 음악 분석에 몰두하는 학문 분야로서 윤리적 의미를 비롯한 소위 음악 외적 의미와 거리를 취해 왔고, 이러한 학문적경향은 현재의 윤리적 환경에서 강조되는 타자 중심의 윤리와 충돌을 일으킨다. 음악이론적 체계를 일반화하는 일은 여전히 차이의 배제를 수반하는 행위이며, 음악분석 담론은 특정한 편향적 원리나 방법론의 우위를 유지하고 있다. 솅커이론의 윤리적 문제에 대한 최근의 비판적 논의에 주목하면서, 이 논문은 레비나스의 타자 윤리, 스피박의 서발턴 연구와 음악이론을 대면시킴으로써 체계의 구축과 음악분석이라는 음악이론적 실천을 위한 구체적인 윤리적 지향을 마련하고자 한다. 궁극적으로 이 연구는 음악이론이 다양한 음악이론적 타자와의 만남과 상호배려를 통해 타자 윤리를 실현할 수 있는 담론이 될 수 있음을 주장한다.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explore the relation between the ethical environment of the 21st-century and music-theoretical practices. Music theory, as a discipline largely focusing on the construction of musical system and music analysis, has kept its distance from so-called extramusical meanings, of which ethical meanings are a part. Such tendency conflicts with the present ethical environment that emphasizes the ethics of otherness. Music theory’s generalization of music-theoretical systems still entails the exclusion of difference, and music-analytical discourses continue to maintain the primacy of a particular, and biased, principle or methodology. Focusing on the recent critiques of Schenkerian theory, and drawing on Levinas’s ethics of otherness and Spivak’s subaltern studies, this paper seeks to provide a more concrete ethical direction for music-theoretical practices. Ultimately, this paper argues music theory can become a discourse where the ethics of otherness can be realized through its enhanced encounter and interaction with various musictheoretical others.
