Abstract

This paper explores the way in which we can understand the concept of tonal music within the context of globalization. Tonality and tonal music have been constantly criticized by postmodernist critics. However, recent music theoretical studies reorganize tonal theory from a more general perspective, or provide some alternative tonal theory by taking a critical stance on preexisting tonal theories. These approaches highlight the activeness and freedom in musical listening rather than trying to control listening from a single unifying principle. The paper seeks to understand the intentionality of Schenkerian theory by observing actual practices of Schenkerian analysis, and to distinguish it from Schenker’s own problematical political ideology. The paper then tries to find a third orientation for present theory of tonal music by criticizing the regional bias of postmodernist studies of tonal music. Ultimately, by seizing upon the concept of universality which has been newly conceived in the context of globalization, this paper tries to provide a new horizon for the study of 21st-century tonal music.
