Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze fans' acceptance of virtual idols that appeared as metaverse during the COVID-19 pandemic era. The first music video for the girl group 'aespa' became a hot topic due to the appearance of the band members and avatar members with Metaverse technology. Where they provided a new means of communication between fans and idols in the non-face to face era, the study sought to determine if fans were interested in avatars or simply an attempt to enter the global K-pop market. Here are the results of the study. For one thing, it gets a lot of attention for its music video featuring the first avatar member and the actual idol. Communication between fans and virtual idols, however, is not properly achieved. Secondly, members of avatars can be viewed as a marketing strategy for Korean companies based on the Western market's preconceptions of Asian female idols. Thirdly, the debut of virtual idols using the metaverse is an active and systematic cultural strategy driven by profit. Given the protracted COVID-19 pandemic, research into virtual idols designing metaverse experiments is likely to continue in the future.
